I suppose I should begin by thanking a close friend, O—, for bringing this book to my attention. During a conversation with her I managed to come out ahead with this title and I will like to assume I came out the better for reading it.
After four years of reading countless pages of textbooks, prescribed works (often the critically-acclaimed failures of other writers), this book was just what I needed.
I read the book from cover to cover in just one weekend and it's worth every second dedicated to it. The growth and self-realization that takes place between the two boys comments on the sexist/masochist cultural upbringing in Hispanic/Latinx communities. And as a 22 year-old female, I could still relate to the story and characters as they search for themselves and try to solve the secrets of their own universes.
TL;DR
A perfect weekend read!
